Apple Announces OS X Mountain Lion

In a developer conference this morning, Apple announced their next iteration of the Mac operating system named Mountain Lion, the successor to the less-than-a-year-old OS X Lion released towards the end of last year.

With over 100 new features lined up to be included in the release, it looks like it’s set to be a huge update and a must-have for all Mac users. There will be greater iCloud integration, a few iOS-like features will be included in the release such as the popular messaging application between devices including iPhones iPods and iPads. Now the messaging system comes to the Mac so you can pick up a conversation where you left off from your computer, or your portable device.

Other applications of note include a Reminder app to integrate and sync with the iOS version, notes, notification centre, game centre, twitter integration and more.

A detailed list can be found at Apple’s website at http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/features.html

If you wanted to get into Messages straight away without waiting, there is a public beta of the app available for download from http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/messages-beta/

Apple reinvents the textbook

Apple has unveiled a completely new way to access, create and experience text books like never before. With the release of iBooks 2 and iAuthor – students, teachers and readers alike can use truly interactive, engaging, dynamic books right on their iPad.

The education system has always relied on physical paper books, often heavy ones. For kids or students of any age that can be a real burden, especially when carrying multiple books to school or college. The other major disadvantage of physical books is that the content itself is static, frozen in time, not in any way interactive, so it’s hard for many students to really engage with the information. Physical books also can’t have their content updated after they are printed which is a major limitation.

Apple have just changed all of the rules, changed the experience entirely. Now anyone with an iPad can browse through the entire catalogue of available textbooks right on their device, download them right to their device and carry as many of them around as they like. Books that have interactive multitouch diagrams, videos, images, 3D objects and more. There is an inbuilt dictionary and note taking system which makes studying that much easier.

With the revolutionary new App iBooks Author, anyone with a Mac can create and publish these amazing books. The iBooks Author App is a free download from the Mac App store, which comes with all new Macs. It’s super simple to create interactive rich books with videos, images, 3D models and dynamic graphs. This will change everything, especially for teachers who can write customised courses and content for their students and update them anytime they like.

The Mac Guru highly recommends any student, teacher or person that reads books to discover this amazing new way of consuming the wonderful content that books have always contained. That content has just become a far more interactive, dynamic, captivating experience, available to anyone with an iPad.
